Another record has been crushed under Lady Gaga's monstrous stilettos. The "Hair" singer became the first Twitter user to reach 10 million followers over the weekend, beating Justin Bieber to the mark.
Mother Monster reached the 10 million plateau around midnight on Sunday. She celebrated by tweeting a message to fans that included a twitpic of herself in London, in which she is seen in living color exiting a limo while the crush of paparazzi around her are depicted in black and white.
"10 MillionMonsters!" she wrote. "I'm speechless, we did it! It's an illness how I love you. Leaving London smiling."
By Monday morning, Gaga had increased her lead over Bieber, racking up 10,052,820 followers while the teen sensation remained just shy of the mark at 9,662,147 as he continued a swing through Japan on his "Never Say Never" tour.
The Mediabistro.com has been charting the Gaga/Bieber Twitter battle and noted that while the Biebs is currently lagging behind, he's on schedule to take over the #1 spot later this year in what looks to be a continued see-saw skirmish between the two very different pop icons to rule the social media world.
Gaga's eyebrow-raising appearance on "American Idol" last week, where she mentored the top four contestants, no doubt helped drive up her Twitter numbers. Sporting a Cruella de Vil look that included a giant fake birthmark on her face, Gaga encouraged the various singers to get "psycho," treat the microphone like a girlfriend, not to worry about being evil and shake their hips to look sexy.
