Amy Winehouse Final Weeks

Amy Winehouse Final Weeks

It was no secret that Amy Winehouse led a very troubled life -- but her tragic death at age 27 has nonetheless stunned the world. A brilliant musician who was frequently in and out of both rehab and jail, Winehouse spent her final weeks wrestling with addiction and heartbreak.

One month ago, Winehouse was set to embark on a European comeback tour, anticipating the release of her long-awaited third album. At that point, she had been out of rehab for one year -- but she checked back in for a few days in May 2011, seeking an "assessment" of her alcohol problem. That should have been a red flag, as her first tour date -- on June 18, in Belgrade -- was a disaster. Winehouse stumbled around the stage, appeared incoherent and didn't finish a single song. Three days later, she canceled the remainder of her tour, reportedly to focus on her recovery.

But things weren't going well in Amy's personal life. The Daily Mail says that she was "inconsolable" after being dumped by boyfriend Reg Traviss in May. (She had proposed marriage to him in 2010; he turned her down.) Friends say Traviss ended the relationship when he couldn't save Winehouse from her alcohol problem.

On Thursday, Winehouse gave what was to be her last performance: backing up protégé and goddaughter Dionne Bromfield at an iTunes Festival concert in North London. Unfortunately, there was very little performing involved; Winehouse mostly stumbled around the stage, looking as if she were in a different room from the singer and band. On Friday, 24 hours before her death, Amy visited her mother Janis -- who recalls thinking it was "only a matter of time" before Amy succumbed to her demons.

"She seemed out of it," Janis tells the Daily Mail. "But her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me."

According to U.K. paper The People, Winehouse was partying into the late hours on Friday night. The paper claims she was seen buying narcotics, "believed to include cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and the horse tranquilizer ketamine," from a drug dealer on Friday night at 10:30. Her body was found in her apartment on Saturday afternoon.

While an overdose is assumed, police are urging fans not to jump to conclusions. "At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained and there have been no arrests in connection with the incident," the Metropolitan Police superintendent told the Hollywood Reporter.

Another police source tells People that there was no sign drugs or drug paraphernalia found in Winehouse's Camden home, while Britain's Sun newspaper says the singer received a clean bill of health at a routine doctor's checkup on Friday. The cause of Winehouse's untimely death might not be known for weeks, when a toxicology report is completed.
