New 'Arrested Development' TV Season and Movie in the Works

New 'Arrested Development' TV Season and Movie in the Works

It's really happening -- Fox's cult classic sitcom Arrested Development is returning to primetime with new episodes before moving to the big screen with a feature film.

Executive producer and show creator Mitchell Hurwitz announced at The New Yorker Festival's Arrested Development reunion panel on Oct. 2 that he's half-way through a movie script and that production on a feature film should start as early as next summer.

The wacky Bluth family (felonious patriarch Jeffrey Tambor, domineering mother Jessica Walters, kids Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, and star-crossed grandkids Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat) is not only potentially taking over a theater near you in 2013, but the critically acclaimed series will also return to television for a limited, 10-episode run.

According to attendees, Hurwitz wants to create a mini-season that would use each episode to focus on a different member of the Bluth family and catch audiences up in anticipation of the upcoming movie, TVLine reports.

"It's true. We will do 10 episodes and the movie," Bateman twittered after the panel. "Probably shoot them all together next summer for a release in early '13. VERY excited!"

Arrested Development originally aired from 2003-2006 before being infamously canceled despite universally excellent reviews. If it returns to TV, it will likely do so on cable television. Showtime and Netflix are reportedly in the running to air the new episodes.
