Has Ricky Gervais Been Banned from the Golden Globes?

Has Ricky Gervais Been Banned from the Golden Globes?

On Sunday, Ricky Gervais shocked the audience at the Golden Globes with his pointed jabs at beloved celebrities. Did the irreverent host go so far out of line that he's been banned from future awards shows? Rumors started swirling midway through the show when the irreverent Brit seemed to disappear from the ceremony for a long stretch of time. Was he getting a talking-to backstage? Gervais says no -- the show went exactly as planned.

"I did every single introduction I was meant to. There just happened to be a long gap," Gervais wrote in a press statement the next day. "This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose the presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humor.) Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great."

Onstage, however, there seemed to be some serious discomfort about Gervais's jokes: Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hanksand Tim Allen were among the stars who tried to shame him for being mean-spirited. And members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, which sponsors the Globes, had mixed reactions to Gervais's controversial performance.

"He definitely cross the line," said Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Philip Berk, whose age Gervais mocked during the ceremony. "And some of the things he said were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky.

While Berk claimed that he was pleased overall with Gervais' performance, an anonymous member of the Hollywood Foreign Press told Popeater that Gervais would never be invited back to the Golden Globes after Sunday night.

"Any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated," says the source. "He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain."

Among the stars who bore the brunt of Gervais's insults were Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp (whose critically reviled flop The Tourist he mocked mercilessly), Charlie Sheen, Cher and Robert Downey Jr.. We don't know if Gervais will be back next year, but we'd urge him not to despair: another naughty Brit, Russell Brand, credits a disastrous awards show hosting gig (the 2008 MTV VMAs) for making him famous in the U.S.A.

Do you think Ricky Gervais should be asked back to the Golden Globes, or did he blow it? Chime in below!
