Jerry Seinfeld Calls Royal Wedding an "Absurd Act"

Jerry Seinfeld Calls Royal Wedding an "Absurd Act"

With the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton just two weeks away, anticipation for the event has reach a fever pitch in England -- and, of course, the United States as well. Leave it to acerbic comedian Jerry Seinfeld to burst the bubble.

According to U.K. newspaper the Daily Mail, Seinfeld appeared on the English morning show Daybreak yesterday to promote his upcoming show at London's O2 arena, and he didn't have the nicest things to say about the upcoming ceremony -- or the royal family for that matter. When asked about Wills and Kate's nuptials, Seinfeld replied, "Well it's a circus act. It's an absurd act."

Adrian Chiles, the interviewer, seemed taken aback -- and yet Seinfeld was just getting started. He continued: "You know, it's a dress-up. It's a classic English thing of let's play dress-up. Let's pretend that these are special people. OK, we'll all pretend that -- that's what theater is. That's why the British have the greatest theater in the world. They love to dress up and they love to play pretend."

Chiles said afterward: "I'll join in on any of that stuff, if it's a Brit doing it. But I can't bear Americans criticising the royal family. It turns me into a Royalist!"

While it should come as no surprise that the famously snarky Seinfeld would mock the seriousness of the royal event (after all, this is the man who called Lady Gaga a "jerk"), Seinfeld might want to stand "on ceremony" a little bit more while he's, you know, in England. Otherwise, as Chiles commented, "He'll be doing that show from the Tower of London, never mind the O2."

William and Kate are set to marry at London's Westminster Abbey on April 29.
