Jake Gyllenhaal Takes on Outdoors on Man vs. Wild

Jake Gyllenhaal Takes on Outdoors on Man vs. Wild

Sure, Jake Gyllenhaal has done his share of action adventure movies. (Last year's Prince of Persia and the recent Source Code come to mind.) But do moviegoers believe his life is actually at risk? Nah, that's what stuntmen are for!

His latest project, on the other hand, took the 30-year-old thespian on a literal adventure. In the season premiere of the Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild (Monday, July 11, 9 p.m. ET), he joined extreme survival expert Bear Grylis on his latest jaunt -- navigating the mountains, glaciers and volcanoes of remote Iceland.

Why would a pretty boy actor agree to endure grueling hikes in extremely harsh weather conditions, relying on whatever Grylis is eating for sustenance? (This is a guy who's eaten live snakes and bear poop, people.)

"For me, it's all about discovery," Gyllenhaal said in a press release issued by…well, the Discovery Channel. So really, that could have gone without saying.

But it's to Gyllenhaal's credit that this A-list actor, who could easily rest on his laurels (and the millions he's made from blockbuster movies), chose to challenge himself for this project. He's not the first big star to do it, either. Will Ferrell tagged along with Grylls in an episode in 2009.

And according to Grylis, Gyllenhaal held his own on the trip. "The wild is always very revealing -- not only physically but mentally," he said. "You've got to smile when it's driving horizontal hail and be able to face your fears and just get on and do it -- and on both of those accounts, Jake came up strong."
